British Designer Antony Price, Renowned for Styling Iconic Acts Like Bowie and Duran Duran, Dies at 80.
The British designer Antony Price, the influential British fashion designer who crafted some of the most iconic looks favored by artists from David Bowie to Roxy Music and even royalty like Queen Camilla, has died at 80 years old.
Price was best known for his defined forms and performative fashion, such as the pastel suits that featured in the iconic band Duran Duran's classic music video for "the song Rio".
"Remembering him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the band released a statement on social media."
His passing follows less than a month after he debuted his most recent collection in London, marking his return to the runway after over three decades. Artist Lily Allen showcased a dress that paid homage to the famous black velvet "revenge dress" once worn by the late Princess Diana.
A Pioneering Career
A native of Yorkshire, born in 1945, Price moved to London during the sixties to study at the prestigious Royal College of Art.
Shortly after his graduation, he started his work in menswear at Stirling Copper and was responsible for the form-fitting, button-fly pants that rock legend Mick Jagger wore during the band's Gimme Shelter tour in 1969.
He founded his own label in 1979 and held his debut runway presentation a year later. The show opened with looks from the famed model Jerry Hall, who also wore the bridal gown Price specifically designed for her marriage to Sir Mick Jagger.
Partnerships with Stars
A long-time collaborator of David Bowie, Price was the mind behind the distinctive jacket the artist wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His signature ability to merge tailoring for all genders along with his technical proficiency in designing body-hugging looks made him a "genuine original," as stated by the British Fashion Council.
During the nineties, he commenced designing ensembles for Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, such as various looks for her American tour after becoming Duchess.
After a career spanning half a century, Price staged what would be his last show in London just last month in conjunction with the label 16Arlington.
- Architectural Forms: The core of his aesthetic.
- Dramatic Impact: Influencing music videos and stagewear.
- Genre-Blending Design: Blurring lines between clothing for men and women.
- A Client List from Rock to Royalty: Spanning iconic musicians and members of the royal family.
The industry says farewell to a authentic original whose impact on style and culture remains indelibly etched.
