Educator Slain and 25 Female Students Kidnapped in Armed Clash at Nigerian School

Security breach at learning center
Learning centers in northern Nigeria have become frequent targets for weapon-wielding factions

Armed assailants have killed a teacher and kidnapped no fewer than 25 pupils in an assault against a educational institution for young women in Nigeria's northwestern region, police reports indicate.

The gang of attackers stormed the Government Girls Comprehensive Secondary School in Maga, Kebbi State at around 4 AM local time on the start of the week, police confirmed.

The attackers "exchanged fire with security forces on duty in a firefight" before climbing over the boundary wall and taking the pupils captive from their dormitory, according to a statement.

An educational worker was lost their life while safeguarding the students. A second sustained gunshot wounds and is now undergoing medical care.

Observers recounted a sizeable number of assailants, identified in the area as outlaw groups, who appeared discharging weapons intermittently to cause panic.

Area inhabitants disclosed to media that the gunmen subsequently marched a contingent of young women into surrounding rural areas.

The authorities announced they had sent "extra specialized police forces, alongside military personnel and local protection units" to the area.

A systematic finding and recovery effort is underway in surrounding forests and potential getaway paths.

In the past few years, educational institutions in Nigeria's north have regularly come under attack for weapon-carrying factions, who routinely perform seizures to demand financial compensation or secure advantages in discussions with officials.

The incident in Kebbi State highlights the persistent security crisis plaguing the region, resulting in households in Maga in a state of fearful exhaustion as they expect and desire their daughters' safe return.

Safety emergency in Nigeria's northern territories has worsened considerably in the last several months, with learning centers experiencing the greatest impact of the unrest.
