French authorities will start intercepting migrant vessels in Channel following UK pressure
France has agreed to start stopping small boats in the Channel, following an extended period of insistence from the United Kingdom.
The change in policy comes after the British leader sent a letter to the French leader urging him to support the plan and saying there presently "lack any effective deterrent" in the maritime passage.
French security forces will be allowed to stop the migrant vessels at sea, but exclusively prior to they've picked up their passengers, according to authoritative confirmation.
French police have infrequently intervened to stop the heavily loaded boats leaving the coastline because it is considered excessively high a danger to both officers and individuals.
"It is essential that we implement these methods this month... We have zero effective deterrent in the Channel waters."
Currently, a French maritime police representative states officers will begin taking action at sea, with the aim of protecting lives.
Notably, the spokesperson excluded the use of nets to intercept boats, which had earlier been reported as a possible technique to snarl the engines of the boats.
The decision to take action at all is a significant step forward, following a brief change towards a more aggressive strategy this warmer season, which ceased when the former Interior Minister left office.
That was highlighted in the summer month, preceding a meeting between the Prime Minister and French president, when authorities were observed wading into the sea to slash the hulls of a vessel.
Currently French officials will again be permitted to stop boats prior to they collect asylum-seeking individuals from the coastal areas of northern France, however it's uncertain how the small boats will be prevented.
Powerful gusts are currently delaying the commencement of intervention operations and the human trafficking networks will be seeking ways to adapt to avoid detection, as they have done so often in the previous instances.
