Fury Erupts as Trump's Comments on Rob Reiner Ignites Sharp Criticism

Figures from both sides of the political divide and the Hollywood world are uniting to condemn former President Donald Trump for his comments following the tragic deaths of renowned director Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele.

An Inflammatory Online Statement

Following the discovery of the couple deceased at their Los Angeles home, Trump posted on his platform to label the late director as "tortured and struggling". The message, he claimed Reiner's death was "due to the hostility he caused others through his massive, unyielding, and untreatable condition with a debilitating disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME".

His comments then pivoted to self-praise, juxtaposing Reiner's supposed "raging obsession" and "obvious paranoia" with what Trump called the "unprecedented era of America".

Police Update and Arrest

Police have since announced the detention of the couple's 32-year-old son, Nick, on charges related to homicide in relation to the incident. It is reported his bail was set at a substantial sum.

A Torrent of Criticism from Celebrities and Politicians

The reaction to Trump's post was immediate and harsh.

This is a disgusting and despicable comment,” said public figure Patrick Schwarzenegger.

Media personality Whoopi Goldberg, who called Reiner a friend, also criticized the remarks. Goldberg referenced previous rhetoric from Trump regarding political violence, asking, "Do you have no shame? Is it possible to get any worse?"

California's Democratic governor, Gavin Newsom, succinctly stated, "This is a sick man."

Echoing this sentiment, Congressman Maxwell Alejandro Frost declared, "He is a contemptible piece of trash."

Senator Chris Murphy added, "Trump has just crossed a line. Now implying Rob and Michele Reiner brought on their own murder because they didn’t support him. Deeply disturbing."

Criticism from Within Party

Some Republican elected officials also voiced dismay.

Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene emphasized that the situation was "a family tragedy, not about political feuds or rivals". She also mentioned struggles with addiction and mental health some families face.

Another Republican congressman, Thomas Massie, called Trump's remarks "inappropriate and disgraceful" considering the nature of the deaths. He publicly dared others in his political party to defend the statements.

The Director's History and Views on Trump

Rob Reiner was long a vocal detractor of Donald Trump. In a past conversation, he stated Trump was "mentally unfit" for the office. He had also warned about the dangers of autocracy should Trump return to power.

"We see authoritarianism on the rise around the world," Reiner noted. "Should the United States crumble, there’s a risk that democracy collapse around the world."

Despite his strong opposition, Reiner had in the past expressed "complete revulsion" and denounced political violence without reservation following the shooting of a different political figure.

An Ironic Connection: The Art of the Deal

Providing a layer of historical connection, Michele Reiner, previously Michele Singer, was the photographer who captured the cover image for Donald Trump's 1987 book, The Art of the Deal.

Rob Reiner had previously recounted the anecdote of the session, mentioning Trump's request for "special hairspray" while being photographed on a skyscraper with a view of Central Park.
