Manchester United Set to Sign German Striker Lea Schüller from the Bavarian Giants
The Women's Super League club are finalising completing the signing for prolific Germany striker Lea Schüller in a permanent move away from Bayern Munich.
A Major Acquisition for the WSL Side
Schüller, who has half a year left on her deal, has been a consistent goal-getter for her club and the national team. Having netted over 100 goals for Bayern and scored 54 times in 82 caps for her country. This signing will be seen as a major signing for the WSL side.
Her exit from Bayern has been anticipated after she was seen holding back emotions while applauding the club's supporters after a victory over Bayer Leverkusen this month.
Reports in December that the Frauen-Bundesliga was set to lose one of its leading forwards. According to multiple sources, all the paperwork for the transfer are now finalised.
Consistent Goalscoring to Strengthen the Forward Line
The 28-year-old’s arrival should represent a significant uplift to the team's forward line. Schüller has been highly reliable in front of goal in the Bundesliga.
- For seven consecutive seasons, up to and including the last term, she achieved at least a double-digit tally of league goals.
- She claimed the Golden Boot in 2021-22 season with a haul of 16 goals.
Gathering Momentum at Carrington
The acquisition of Schüller’s signature comes at a time when United seem to be building momentum.
Recent on-pitch successes feature qualifying for the European knockout phase playoffs as a seeded team and a victory in the League Cup quarter-finals.
Off the pitch, the mid-season window has seen further business:
- The acquisition of Sweden right-back Hanna Lundkvist on a multi-year deal.
- The new deal for Japan playmaker Hinata Miyazawa, who has become fan favourite since arriving in 2023.
On the midfielder's extension, a club official stated: “Miyazawa is now a critical part to the way we play. Her footballing intelligence and skill enables her and the team to control and dictate play from the middle of the park.”
The new defender, having arrived from a club in the American league, added: “You can feel how much the club have progressed in the last few years, playing in one of the strongest leagues in the world and now featuring in the top European competition.”
