Plans for Trump-Putin Talks Postponed Shortly Following Budapest Negotiations Suggested

Currently exist "no plans" for US President Donald Trump to meet Russian President Putin "anytime soon", a administration representative has stated.

Recently the US president stated he and the Russian president would meet in Hungary's capital within two weeks to examine the ongoing hostilities.

A preparatory meeting between America's top diplomat Secretary Rubio and his opposite number Foreign Minister Lavrov was planned for this week - but the administration stated the two had had a "constructive" discussion and that a face-to-face session was not "required".

The White House did not share additional specifics on why the talks had been delayed.

Earlier Events

Trump had raised the possibility of a Hungarian meeting via telephone with the Russian leader, a day before hosting Ukraine's Volodymyr Zelensky in the White House.

Some reports suggested his talks with the Ukrainian leader had been a "shouting match", with sources claiming the president had pushed him to relinquish large areas of eastern Ukraine as part of a deal with Russia.

Nevertheless, on Monday Trump embraced a ceasefire proposal backed by Kyiv and EU officials to halt the hostilities on the current front line.

"Let it be cut where it stands," he said.

Moscow has frequently resisted against freezing the present battle positions.

Moscow was exclusively seeking "enduring stability", Russia's foreign minister commented on Tuesday, indicating that pausing conflict would merely represent a temporary ceasefire.

Political Perspectives

The "fundamental issues" of the hostilities required resolution, the Russian diplomat stated, using Moscow's terminology for a set of comprehensive conditions that encompass the recognition of total Russian authority over the eastern region as well as the military reduction of Ukraine – a non-starter for Kyiv and its European partners.

The Ukrainian president stated talks regarding the battle positions were the "commencement of dialogue" but that Russia was "taking all measures" to prevent dialogue.

He also said the only topic that could make Moscow "become engaged" was that of the delivery of distance-capable munitions to the Ukrainian military.

Strategic Factors

The Russian president's spontaneous discussion with the US leader recently occurred before rumors that the US was considering delivering distance-capable weapons to Ukrainian forces that could potentially strike deep into Russia.

Zelensky said it was the Tomahawks issue that had pressured the Kremlin to participate in talks. The conversation concerning the weapons systems had turned out to be a "significant input" in negotiations", he added.
