What We Know Concerning the Victims of the Bondi Shooting

A minimum of 16 individuals were killed and more than 40 were wounded when assailants shot at a Hanukah gathering at Bondi Beach, an incident local authorities have labeled a terrorist attack.

As of the newest reports, officials have announced the number of fatalities is 16, encompassing one of the suspected attackers. Furthermore, 42 injured people were taken to the hospital.

Those who died are still awaiting formally identified, but authorities state their ages are from 10 and 87 years of age.

Listed are the victims who have been identified so far.

Eli Schlanger

Originally from London rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first to be publicly identified.

Described as a father-of-five, he was the associate rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Family members and friends remembered him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very kind and sociable person who was dedicated to assisting others”.

“How is it possible that a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a relative said.

Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the arrival of their newest son in October.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also among those killed, according to his wife.

She recounted the events before the shooting, explaining they had been standing together when the gunfire began. “He moved to protect me because he wanted to stay near me,” she said.

The couple were both survivors of the Holocaust, having endured unspeakable terror in their youth. They had later relocated to Australia from Ukraine.

Dan Elkayam

The French foreign ministry have announced that French national Dan Elkayam is a casualty.

In a statement, a senior official declared that France stood with his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This low act is a new, tragic manifestation of a revolting outpouring of antisemitic hatred that we must put a stop to,” the message continued.

One Child

A young girl, aged 10 who was taken to the Sydney Children’s Hospital is among those who had died, authorities stated.

One Israeli Citizen

One victim from Israel was a fatality in the incident, according to reports citing the Israeli government.

Those Injured

From the 42 people taken to hospital, many are still under care, with several in a critical state. Those hurt include two police officers who responded to the attack.

A wounded man is a bystander who attempted to intervene to confront one of the attackers. Described as a local hero, he received gunshot wounds but is in stable condition in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a community leader. Reports indicate he was wounded and underwent treatment in hospital.

Communicating, he recounted the scene as an “absolute bloodbath,” but also praised the response of those who came to assist. He said he felt it was a “miracle” he was alive.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was also injured in the shooting. He described he listened to “dozens and dozens” of gunshots.

“Initially, I believed it was rubber bullets, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he explained. “I sustained a gunshot wound. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
